Essential oils to avoid during pregnancy
Pregnancy brings with it so much joy and excitement, but it also comes with a whole lot of questions - especially when it comes to what skincare ingredients are off limits during pregnancy. One of the questions I am often asked is what essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy and what essential oils can be enjoyed.
It is important to recognise that essential oils are highly concentrated substances that can enter the bloodstream. Therefore, caution is necessary, especially since much of the available information regarding their effects is derived from animal studies. Conducting research on the side effects of herbs and essential oils during pregnancy is challenging and often not ethical. The primary concern with using essential oils during pregnancy is their potential toxicity to the developing fetus, which can lead to a condition known as "embryotoxicity," characterised by an increased rate of cell death observed in animal studies. Additionally, some essential oils may stimulate uterine contractions, which can pose significant risks.
This guide outlines which essential oils to avoid and which are generally considered safer when properly diluted.
